REVIEW: Kokuryu Super Summer Cake

Jun 24, 2015 //
It's been a while since my last post. To all makeup lovers like me, have you tried doing the 1 MONTH MAKEUP BAN - No buying of new makeup for a month? I tried but I failed. I should stop trying the 1-month makeup ban because I ended up buying more than normal. >.< I even don't know why :))

Whenever I roam inside SM Megamall Beauty Section inside the department store, I always saw Kokuryu Kiosk without trying to check out their products. I've read GIRLTalk Forums and different facebook Makeup Artist Groups mentioning this brand. Many makeup artists used it for their clients - during pageants and pictorials When I checked Instagram as well, it was also imported to nearby countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. Now I'm convinced to buy their famous Kokuryu Summer Cake foundation. I think my face powders are around 10-40% left - I think they're 4 of them and all of them hit the pan. I need a new one just in case I need to throw most of them.

So here's the 50g Kokuryu Summer Cake in the shade of Orange Blush.
I just tried my luck with this shade. It might look darker on it's pan. I'm around NC 30-35 in MAC.

Packaging: The bigger pan is red, however, the smaller pan is in white packaging. It has a flimsy plastic cover inside. Make sure to have a makeup sponge ready with you.

What's printed in the box:

What I like about the product:
  • It's a local product with a long lasting formula that also suits oily skin
  • Affordable
  • Buildable coverage
  • Powdery & Silky feel
  • Most shades are very close to Asian shades with yellow undertone
  • It was in the market for a long time, check out the youtube video and it was way back 1970s
What I do not like:
  • Availability - not all drugstore or department stores carry this brand
  • For dry skin, you have to exfoliate first - even it claims to have a moisturizer.
  • Other shades might be difficult to try, to tell you honestly, you cannot swatch it when you're planning to buy it unless you have a dampen sponge with you :)) The formula doesn't stick much to fingers when I tried to rub it, so how can I try it to my face? Beware of Fake Kokuryu in the Market. It should be difficult to rub using fingers, it shouldn't transfer much like other face powders.
  • If you haven't cleared out your white heads, again exfoliate first, else they will be visible - check out my photo.
Would I recommend it?
For now, I cannot recommend it for a daily use basis for this reason. Here's my bare face, no moisturizer, no exfoliation. It's just the normal bare - rush face. "Oh, I'm aPORE!" Can you hear them? Haha as well as my white heads! Better prepare your face before applying Kokuryu Summer Cake. If you have a lot of spare time doing those steps, or if you have fewer pores and zits like mine, maybe it might be easier for you to use Kokuryu.

If I have a full day event of course I should be prepared and do all my skincare steps before applying this one, the result was better.

  1. I am very curious to try this. I hope to find it here in London. Right now I have been using Bare Mineral's Ready mineral foundation. I would love to have that beauty blender but it's £20 which is so much for A SPONGE!! :D:D:DD

    1. I think it's not yet available in London. I agree that it was a expensive for a sponge and I'm afraid before to try it out. But honestly it was different from other sponges I've tried so far. Haven't tried yet Bare Mineral's Ready Mineral foundation :)

      Take care! :)

  2. Hi! Your blog is really great. I am from the Philippines and been using Kokuryu for a long time. I am here now in the US and my last one is almost done. Can you suggest any online shop where I can order it. I love Orange Blush too! Thanks!

    1. Hi Alma, I do not know anybody who sells Kokuryu products - US based but if you like I can try to do the shipping part for you. Freight cost might be more expensive than the actual product.
